Lesson topicA famous Kazakh hero
Learning objectives covered in this lesson (curriculum reference)10.3.7 - use appropriate subject-specific vocabulary and syntax to talk about a range of general and curricular topics;
10.4.7 - recognise patterns of development in lengthy texts [inter-paragraph level] on a range of general and curricular topics;
10.5.1 - plan, write, edit and proofread work at text level independently on a range of general and curricular topics;
Lesson goal
  1. Students will be able to use at least 5 subject-specific words (e.g., legend, hero, feat, honour, steppe) in a short oral or written description of a Kazakh hero.
  2. Students will identify the development pattern (chronological, cause–effect, problem–solution) in a 400‑word text about a Kazakh hero and justify their choice with evidence from the text.
  3. Students will independently produce a coherent paragraph (100–120 words) about the importance of ordinary working people in building the country’s prosperity, using appropriate syntax and vocabulary from the lesson.
Value for integrationThe working person

Interdisciplinary links: History (Kazakh national heroes, historical context), Social Studies (labour, professions, economy), Literature (heroic epics, legends).
Values integration: Conscious respect for working people as the foundation of the country’s prosperity. Understanding the dignity of any honest labour and the contribution of blue‑collar professions to the economy. Ability to assess one’s own professional inclinations and to plan an educational pathway. Readiness for conscientious, high‑quality work. Understanding of labour rights and duties. Ability to work in a team and be accountable for the result.

Differentiation (three paths):
  • Gifted learners: advanced tier tasks (analysis of secondary sources, extended writing with counterarguments).
  • Struggling learners: sentence starters, word banks, extra teacher scaffolding, paired work with stronger peers.
  • SEN (universal optional support): larger font handouts, graphic organisers, simplified instructions, extra time, use of text‑to‑speech if needed. No specific diagnosis is assumed.

Engagement (meme/visual)

Teacher: “Good morning, everyone! Look at this picture on the screen. (Shows a meme: a modern welder wearing a traditional Kazakh hat, welding a metal structure that looks like a yurt frame.) What do you see? Why do you think this image is about us – about our lesson and about Kazakhstan today?”

Possible student responses: “It mixes old and new.” “It shows a worker who is like a hero.” “It reminds us that builders and welders also build the country.”

Teacher: “Exactly! Today we will explore who a real hero is – not only legendary warriors, but also the working people whose honest labour makes our country strong. Let’s start.”

Physical pause (1 min, integrated in opening) – standing up, stretching, “hero pose”: feet apart, hands on hips, deep breath – “feel the strength of a worker.”

  • Look at the meme on the screen (or printed, if no projector).
  • Think individually (10 sec), then share with a partner (1 min).
  • Volunteers (2–3) give short answers.
  • Stand up and do the “hero pose” physical pause.
Descriptors (no points):
  • Participates in discussion (one sentence).
  • Makes a connection between the image and the theme of work/heroism.
  • Meme image (printed or on screen) – “welder in traditional hat”.
  • Whiteboard/projector.
