| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (Mind Map & Discussion) |
Teacher: "Good morning, class! Today's topic is 'Music and Film: More than just beats and rhymes.' To start, I want you to think quickly. On your mini-whiteboards, you have 1 minute to create a mind map. Write 'Film Music' in the centre and jot down all the words, feelings, or film scenes that come to mind. Ready? Go!" (Times 1 minute). "Time's up! Look at your maps. Now, choose the three most interesting or powerful associations you have. For example, you might have written 'Jaws – scary', 'happiness', or 'orchestra'. Be ready to share one." Possible prompts: "Why did you choose that one? Can you give a specific example of a film where music made you feel that way?" |
Students individually create a rapid mind map on their whiteboards. They then review it and select three key associations. Volunteers share one association with the class, giving a brief reason or example. Possible responses: "I wrote 'suspense' because the music in thrillers makes my heart race." "I thought of 'Up' – the music at the beginning is so sad." "I wrote 'heroic' for superhero movie themes." |
