Engagement (“What if…?” question)
Teacher: "Good morning, class. Today's topic is about giving advice. Let's start with a 'What if...?' question. What if your best friend sent you an email saying they are incredibly stressed about their final exams and have developed a fear of failing? They feel paralyzed and can't study. What would be your first piece of advice? Think for 30 seconds, then share with your neighbor." Teacher listens to pairs, then asks 2-3 students to share their ideas with the whole class. "Interesting ideas: suggesting a break, talking to someone, making a plan. Today, we'll learn how to structure such advice formally in an email." Students think individually, then discuss the question in pre-assigned pairs (8 pairs total). They listen to peers and engage with the topic. Descriptors: The student participates in the discussion, offers a relevant idea, and listens to their partner.
