Engagement (brain-teaser)
Teacher script (step-by-step):
  1. Greet class: "Good morning. Today we will practise writing informal letters about sport and health."
  2. Display brain-teaser on the board and read it aloud: "I am written to a friend; I am relaxed in tone; I tell a story about your day or plans; I often ask questions and give advice. What am I?"
  3. Ask: "What are your initial hypotheses? Shout out ideas — any answer is fine."
  4. Prompt students to explain why they think that: "Why do you think so? Give one reason in one sentence."
  5. Confirm the answer: "Yes — an informal letter. Today we will focus on how to write one about sport and health exercises."
Teacher-Class dialogue (scripted):
  • Teacher: "What do you think this describes?"
  • Wait for responses and follow-up: "Tell us one reason for your choice."
Student actions (expected):
  1. Listen to the riddle and think for 10–20 seconds.
  2. Volunteer hypotheses: e.g., "A message", "A diary entry", "An informal letter".
  3. Give brief reasons: "It talks about plans", "It is relaxed", "It asks questions."
Possible student responses (examples):
  • "Is it a diary? Because it tells what happened today."
  • "I think it's a letter to a friend because it gives advice and asks questions."
Assessment (descriptors only — no points):
  • Student offers a plausible hypothesis in response to the brain-teaser.
  • Student gives at least one reason for their hypothesis.
  • Student shows engagement (volunteers an answer or supports a peer).
(no points)
Resources:
  • Slide or board with brain-teaser
  • Projector / screen
  • Printed short riddle (if needed)
  • AI suggestion: use a language model to generate varied riddles for warm-up (teacher resource only)
