Engagement: storytelling with deliberate mistake
Teacher’s script (full dialogue):
“Good morning, Grade 8! Today we explore the rich heritage of Kazakhstan. Let me tell you a short story: ‘Last Nauryz, my friend Aigul cooked a huge turkey and we played secret Santa. She wore a beautiful qazaqsha koylek and we sang ‘Jar-Jar’ around the fire. At midnight we exchanged chocolate eggs.’
Wait… something is wrong in my story. Can you spot the deliberate mistake? (possible answers: turkey – not traditional; secret Santa – not Kazakh; chocolate eggs – Easter, not Nauryz). Discuss in pairs for 30 seconds, then share.”
Teacher elicits 3–4 answers, applauds critical listening. “Great! Today we will separate real Kazakh traditions from foreign influences.”
– Listen actively, catch the incongruent elements.
– Pair discussion: whisper to a partner.
– Raise hands, share corrections: “Turkey is not Kazakh, we cook kuyrdak/nauryz kozhe.” “Secret Santa is not Kazakh.” “Chocolate eggs are for Easter.”
Descriptors (no points):
• Spots at least 1 mistake and gives reason.
• Listens to partner with respect.
• Offers plausible correction using background knowledge.
– Teacher’s voice / storytelling.
– Slide with key vocabulary (traditions, heritage, custom, ritual).
– AI suggestion: use ChatGPT to generate similar story variants for differentiation.
