| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (Real-life news hook) |
Teacher: "Good morning, class! I want to show you a headline from a local news website." (Projects headline: "New Playground Opened in Central Park Yesterday"). "Look at this. What happened? Who opened it? Let's think. Can we say it in another way? For example, 'The city council opened a new playground.' That's active. But the headline says 'A new playground was opened.' This is a different structure called the passive voice. Today, we'll learn how to use it to talk about changes in our neighbourhood. First, I want you to predict: Why do journalists or we ourselves sometimes use this 'was opened' structure instead of 'opened'? Discuss with your partner for one minute." | Students read the headline. They discuss the teacher's questions in pairs. They make predictions (e.g., "Maybe we don't know who did it," "Maybe the action is more important," "It sounds more formal."). | Provide the headline with key words (playground, opened, yesterday) highlighted. Use a simple visual of a playground. Allow partner discussion in L1 if needed to formulate ideas. |
Descriptors: The student participates in the discussion, makes a relevant prediction about the use of passive voice. No points. |
Projector/Screen, Slide with news headline. AI Tool: Use a text generator (e.g., ChatGPT) to create multiple simplified versions of the same news headline in active/passive for comparison. |
