| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement: Storytelling with a deliberate mistake |
Teacher says: “Good morning! I’ll tell you a short story about a traveller who visited Kazakhstan. Listen carefully – there is one mistake about Kazakhstan’s geography. Raise your hand when you spot it.” Story: “Last summer I flew to Astana, the capital. From there I drove south to the Caspian Sea, and then continued to the Tian Shan mountains near Almaty. I saw the steppe, the deserts, and even the Altai mountains in the west. The next day I visited Lake Balkhash, which is partly fresh and partly salty.” Wait for students to spot the mistake: “Altai mountains are in the EAST, not in the west.” Then clarify: “Yes! The Altai are in the east. Great listening.” Lead-in question: “Why is it important for citizens to know their country’s geography? How does geography connect to patriotism?” (2–3 brief answers). |
