Lesson goal
  • Goal 1 (comprehension): Students identify the main points and specific details from an extended talk about a new hobby (listening).
  • Goal 2 (reading & language): Students extract specific information from an extended text about unusual hobbies and correctly use comparative adverbs (e.g. more enthusiastically, better, most often).
  • Goal 3 (production): Students produce a short written or spoken comparison of two hobbies using at least three comparative adverb structures (post‑/pre‑verbal position).

Teacher script: "Good morning! Look at this short news clip: a 14‑year‑old girl from Astana started urban sketching as a hobby and won a national contest. What do you think helped her succeed? Write one prediction on your mini‑whiteboard."

Show a 30‑sec video (news snippet) or image. Pause and ask: "Why do people take up new hobbies? Predict two outcomes of starting a hobby." Collect 2‑3 ideas.

Differentiation prompt: For struggling learners, provide sentence starters: "Maybe she … because …"
  • Watch/listen to the real‑life case.
  • Write a prediction on mini‑whiteboard (or notebook).
  • Share with partner (pair), then 2 students report to class.
 Descriptors (no points):
  • Student writes at least one plausible prediction.
  • Uses English (single words or short phrase).
  • Engages in pair sharing.
