| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (method: Storytelling with a deliberate mistake) |
Teacher says: “Listen to a short story about the Ural River. ‘Every spring the river floods the fields, bringing clean, pure snowmelt. Local farmers use that water to grow wheat. This year, near the village of Atyrau, children saw fish jumping and drinking the water happily. The water was crystal clear because of the new factory that releases warm water and vitamins.’ Wait … what’s wrong with this story? Spot the mistake! Turn to your neighbour and discuss in 30 seconds.” After pair talk, invite 2–3 students to share. Guide them to notice: factories do not release ‘vitamins’; warm water (thermal pollution) and chemicals are harmful, not beneficial. Lead into water pollution sources. Differentiation (optional support): provide a sentence strip with underlined words; weaker students can circle the mistake. |
