Storytelling with a deliberate mistake/trigger: Teacher says: “Listen to my short story. After a terrible earthquake last year, many volunteers have been helped the victims. Actually, yesterday I read that rescue teams have been sent to the region. But wait… are these sentences correct? In one of them the passive is wrong. Which one? Why?” (Teacher writes the two sentences on the board: 1) “Volunteers have been helped the victims.” 2) “Rescue teams have been sent to the region.”) Ask students to turn to a partner and discuss for 30 seconds. Then elicit the mistake: “have been helped” is active meaning, but the form is passive. Correct version: “Volunteers have helped the victims” (active) or “The victims have been helped by volunteers” (passive). |
