Lesson opening (5 min)
Engagement (Real-life news hook)
Teacher: "Good morning, class! Before we start, I want to show you a short news headline from last month." (Shows slide: "Rio Carnival 2024 Generates Over $1 Billion for Local Economy"). "Look at this. What do you think this is about? Can you predict how a festival can have such a big economic impact? Discuss with your neighbor for 1 minute."

After discussion: "Now, let's quickly review some key words from our last lesson to get our minds ready. I'll throw the ball. When you catch it, say one word related to traditions and explain it very briefly." (Teacher throws ball to different students, eliciting: parade, red envelope, celebration, festival, customs, traditions, etc.).

Transition: "Excellent! So, festivals are not just fun; they have deep cultural and even economic significance. Today, you will become cultural researchers and creators. You will work in groups to explore a festival and then present it with your own creative twist."
Students read the headline and discuss the question in pairs (18 students = 9 pairs). They make predictions (e.g., "from tourism," "selling costumes," "hotels").

Students participate in the ball toss activity, recalling and defining vocabulary.

Students listen to the lesson introduction.
Descriptors:
  • Participates in pair discussion about the news hook.
  • Recalls and correctly uses at least one vocabulary word from the previous lesson.
