| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (Mind Map) |
Teacher: "Good morning! Today's topic is about homes and hospitality. I want you to think about the phrase 'Visiting a home'. On your mini-whiteboards or notebooks, you have 1 minute to create a mind map. Write 'Visiting a home' in the center and draw branches for any words, feelings, or images that come to mind. Ready? Go!" (Monitors time). "Time's up. Look at your map. Now, choose the three most interesting associations for you. I will ask a few of you to share. Aizhan, what are your three?" (Listens and prompts: "Why is 'food' one of them? What about 'traditions'?"). Transition: "Excellent ideas. Many of you mentioned food, customs, and rules. We will now read a text about visiting a home right here in Kazakhstan. Your task is to be detectives and find specific information about these very things." |
Students quickly create a personal mind map with associations (e.g., family, tea, table, respect, shoes, gifts, beshbarmak, conversation). Students select three key ideas from their map. Volunteers share their words with the class, giving brief explanations (e.g., "I wrote 'respect' because you must be polite in someone's home"). |
Descriptors (no points): • The student generates a mind map with relevant associations. • The student can select and verbally explain three chosen concepts. |
Mini-whiteboards/markers or notebooks, pens. Timer. AI Tool Suggestion: Mentimeter or AnswerGarden for a live, collaborative digital mind map projected on the board. This helps visualize collective prior knowledge instantly and engages all students. |
