| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement method: Riddle/brain-teaser |
Teacher: "Good morning, class! Let’s start with a riddle. I will read it twice. Listen carefully: I can be long or short, I can be made of cotton or silk, I keep you warm or cool, and I often have buttons or a zipper. What am I? (Answer: a jacket/coat.) Now think: someone asked me yesterday, ‘What is your favourite piece of clothing?’ How can I report that question? Write your guess on a slip of paper. You have 1 minute." Collect slips, show 2-3 examples on board. Discuss briefly: "We often change the word order and tense. Today we will learn exactly how to do this." |
Listen to the riddle, write answer on paper. Then write a guess for the reported question (e.g., "She asked what my favourite piece of clothing was"). Share ideas with a partner (pair work – 6 pairs + 1 trio). |
Provide a visual card with the riddle written out + a sentence starter: "She asked what…" for SEN students. Use simple pictures of clothes. |
Descriptors: • participates in riddle activity • attempts to form a reported question (any attempt accepted). |
Slips of paper, board, markers. AI tool: ChatGPT to generate additional riddle variants if needed. Visual cards for SEN. |
