Engagement (method: storytelling with a deliberate mistake/trigger to spot)

Teacher: “Good morning, class! Today we are going to write an email about a magical place. But first, listen to my short story. I went to Kazakhstan last summer. I visited the Burabay mountains. They were not enough beautiful, so I didn't enjoy walking there. Actually, I wanted to cry because the mountains were too ugly. Then I went to the Giant's Causeway in Ireland. It was quite amazing, but I decided to fly home immediately because I hated it. Wait… something is wrong in my story. Can you spot the mistakes?”

Teacher actions: Pause, let students think. Ask “What did I say wrong? Why?” Encourage learners to identify the deliberate mistakes: (1) Burabay is actually beautiful, (2) the Giant's Causeway is not ugly, (3) feelings contradict each other. Elicit that the story contains illogical opinions and incorrect use of adverbs (not enough beautiful instead of not beautiful enough).

Teacher: “Great! Today we will learn to describe places and feelings correctly so our emails make sense and sound polite.”

  • Listen to the teacher’s story.
  • Raise hands to point out mistakes.
  • Answer questions: “Why is it wrong to say 'not enough beautiful'?”, “What should we say instead?”
  • Possible responses: “Burabay is beautiful, you are wrong!”, “You said you hated it but you also said it was amazing”, “We should say 'not beautiful enough'.”
Descriptors (no points):
  • Identifies at least one logical mistake in the story.
  • Suggests a more logical statement about a place.
  • Recognizes incorrect word order for “not enough + adjective”.
  • Whiteboard (for quick notes)
  • Story script (printed or on screen)
  • AI tool: ChatGPT (to generate additional example sentences with mistakes for warm-up)
