Teacher script & instructions:

  1. Teacher stands near the door with a small envelope and a postcard showing the Kazakh flag and an old photo. Teacher: "Good morning! I found this postcard and an old photo at home. They remind me of something that happened last year. Today we'll listen to people talking about events that already happened. First, look at these pictures and tell me what might have happened."
  2. Show two quick images on the projector: (A) a school celebration with the Kazakh flag; (B) two friends laughing at a stage performance. Ask: "What do you think happened? Predict one sentence about each picture. Use past tense if you can."
  3. Prompt students to make a quick prediction (max 30 seconds each). Use a timer. Encourage one-sentence answers. "Predict the ending: were people excited or bored? Why?"
  4. Teacher models one prediction: "I think they celebrated Independence Day last year. They looked proud and interested." Then say: "Listen carefully to a short conversation. After listening, we'll check our predictions."

Teacher-student dialogue (sample):

Teacher: "What do you think happened in picture A?"

Student: "Maybe it was a school assembly for Independence Day."

Teacher: "Good. Was the crowd interested or bored? Guess: interested or bored?"

Student: "Interested."

  • All students look at the images and give 1-sentence predictions (oral): 10 students, each up to 15–20 seconds.
  • Vote with thumbs up/down or quick show of green/red cards for their prediction whether people were interested or bored.

Possible student responses: "They were at a school concert last summer." "I think they were bored because they are sitting." "Looks like they celebrated something."

  • SEN supports: Provide enlarged printed images on each student's desk; allow choice of pointing to a picture card (interested/bored) instead of speaking.
  • Offer sentence starters (I think..., Maybe they...) on a small card. Allow 1:1 prompting from assistant if needed.

Teacher ensures the SEN student is paired briefly with a peer helper to support expression.

  • Formative: teacher checks that each student gives at least one prediction; record quick tallies of predicted "interested" vs "bored".
  • Success descriptors: Student gives a relevant prediction (green) / gives a partial or unclear prediction (amber) / unable to make a prediction (red).
  • Printed images (A/B), postcard and photo props
  • Projector or large printouts
  • Timer or phone
  • Green/amber/red cards for quick polling
  • Sentence starter cards
