Lesson opening (5 min)
Engagement (What if...? question)
Teacher: "Good morning, class! Let's start with a fun question. What if... you had to play in a very important football match or take a crucial exam tomorrow? Would you do anything special for luck? Maybe wear a specific item of clothing, eat certain food, or follow a ritual? Think for 30 seconds, then share your idea with your partner."

Teacher circulates, listens, then asks 2-3 pairs to share with the class. "Interesting! I heard someone mention lucky socks. That's a perfect lead-in to our topic today: sports, superstitions, and the article 'Do lucky socks really work?'"
Students think individually, then discuss their "What if..." scenarios in pairs (10 pairs total). They listen to peers and engage with the topic introduction. Descriptors:
  • Student actively participates in the pair discussion.
  • Student's response is relevant to the "What if..." prompt.
