Lesson goal
  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify and evaluate key arguments and contradictions in a listening text about communication skills, demonstrating comprehension by correctly completing related tasks (ex.5, p.85).
  • Students will collaboratively create and perform a dialogue (ex.7, p.85) that demonstrates the use of transitive/intransitive verbs and future/past tense forms, while providing constructive peer feedback on performance and ideas.
  • Students will independently write a coherent, grammatically accurate short paragraph of advice (ex.8, p.85) on improving communication skills, using appropriate vocabulary and cohesive devices.

Engagement (Mind map & discussion)		 Teacher: "Good morning, class. Today's topic is 'Have You Got the Gift of the Gab?' Let's start with a quick mind map. On your mini-whiteboards or a piece of paper, write down all words, phrases, or people you associate with the phrase 'gift of the gab' or 'being a great communicator'. You have 1 minute. Go! ... Time's up. Now, look at your map. I want you to choose the three most interesting associations and be ready to explain them. For example, if you wrote 'politician', why? Is it positive or negative? Let's hear from a few volunteers."

Possible prompts: "Sara, what were your three? Why did you choose 'storyteller'?" "Does anyone have a completely different association, like 'manipulation'? Let's discuss." 		Students individually create a mind map with associations (e.g., confident, talkative, persuasive, salesman, TED Talk, listener). They select three items and prepare a brief explanation. Volunteers share their choices and reasoning with the class, responding to teacher and peer questions. Descriptors (no points):
  • Generates multiple relevant associations.
  • Selects three distinct items and provides a clear, reasoned explanation for each.
  • Actively listens to peers and builds on their ideas.
