Teacher: "Good morning! Our unit is about imagination. Let's start with a quick vote. Imagine our school gets a large grant. Which ONE project should it fund? Option A: A high-tech VR lab for art and science. Option B: A community garden and outdoor theatre. Option C: Upgrading all existing computer labs. No discussion yet—just show me your choice with your fingers: 1 for A, 2 for B, 3 for C." Teacher tallies votes on board. "Interesting split! Now, in 30 seconds, turn to your neighbor and give ONE reason for your choice. Use a full sentence." Teacher debriefs: "I heard 'it's cooler' and 'it's more useful'. Which of these phrases sounds more formal, like you're talking to the school principal? Let's keep that in mind today." |
Students vote silently with fingers. They pair up (6 pairs) and share a quick reason with their partner. Volunteers share their partner's reason with the class. | Pre-written options with icons are displayed on the board/screen. Teacher can verbally repeat options and physically demonstrate finger counts. Partner talk is structured with a sentence starter: "I chose... because...". | Descriptors only (no points): • The student participates in the vote. • The student articulates a reason (simple or complex) to a peer. • The student can identify an example of informal language from the debrief. |
