| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (What if...?) |
Teacher: "Good morning, class. Today we're stepping into history. I want you to imagine something. What if one night, a wall was built right through the middle of our city? What if you woke up and your school was on one side, and your best friend's house was on the other, and you couldn't cross to see them? Think for a moment. What would you feel? What would you do? Turn to your partner and share one thought." After 2 minutes of pair discussion: "Okay, let's hear some ideas. What did you and your partner discuss?" Possible Student Responses: "I'd be scared/angry." "I'd try to find a way around it." "I'd miss my family." "It wouldn't be fair." Teacher: "These are powerful feelings. Today, we're learning about a time when this really happened. We're learning about the Berlin Wall. Keep these feelings of separation and the desire for connection in mind as we learn." |
Students listen to the scenario. They discuss the "What if...?" question with a partner for 2 minutes. Volunteers share their or their partner's ideas with the class. | Formative: Observation of pair discussions. Listening for engagement and initial emotional connection to the theme. | Projector/screen for a hook image (e.g., a map of a bisected city). AI Tool: ChatGPT/DALL-E to generate a speculative "What if our city was divided?" image or scenario description to deepen the hook. |
