Lesson topicGrammar: Adjective complements
Learning objectives covered in this lesson (curriculum reference) 11.5.5 – develop with minimal support coherent arguments supported when necessary by examples and reasons for a wide range of written genres in familiar general and curricular topics;
11.6.3 – use a variety of adjectives complemented by that, infinitive and wh- clauses on a wide range of general and curricular topics;
Lesson goal
  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify and correctly use adjective complements with that, infinitive, and wh- clauses in written and spoken sentences with 80% accuracy.
  • Students will produce a short patriotic paragraph (5-7 sentences) about Kazakhstan’s independence, incorporating at least three different adjective complement structures, demonstrating both grammatical control and civic pride.
  • Students will analyse given examples, classify complements, and provide peer feedback using clear criteria, strengthening their argumentation and writing skills.

Lesson opening (5 min)
Engagement (meme)
Teacher displays a humorous meme: a person confidently filling in a form with “I’m happy that Kazakhstan is independent!”, but the grammar is messy.

Teacher script: “Look at this meme. Why is this funny? What’s wrong with the sentence? (It says “I’m happy that Kazakhstan is independent” but the original has ‘happy for’ – incorrect complement). Why does it matter to use the right structure? This is about our country – we express pride correctly!”
Ask: “What adjective + complement do you see? Is it correct? How would you fix it?”
Students observe meme, then share ideas: “The adjective is ‘happy’ – and it should be followed by ‘that + clause’ or infinitive. We can say “I’m happy that Kazakhstan is independent” or “I’m happy to live in an independent country.”
Quick pair-share (12 students → 6 pairs). Each pair offers one fixed sentence.
Assessment criteria: participation, understanding of formality/complement.
Descriptors: student identifies the issue, suggests correct structure; no points awarded (formative).
Meme slide (projector), whiteboard, markers.
