| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (Storytelling with a deliberate mistake) |
Teacher: “Good morning, class! Today I’ll tell you a short story about the golden eagle — the national symbol of our steppe. Listen carefully because I might make a mistake. Ready?” Teacher tells: “The golden eagle, or berkut, has lived in Kazakhstan for centuries. In the past, Kazakh hunters have used golden eagles for hunting. Today, the golden eagle has become a national emblem. Last year, a famous berkutchi had trained a new eagle for the Eagle Festival. But wait — did you spot the error? Which tense is wrong?” Teacher: “Yes! In the first sentence we need Past Simple, not Present Perfect: ‘Kazakh hunters used’ — because it’s a finished past action. In the last sentence, Past Perfect ‘had trained’ is wrong — we need Past Simple ‘trained’ because it’s a single past action with no earlier past reference. Good job!” Teacher: “Today we’ll explore golden eagles and learn to use Present Perfect and Past Perfect correctly. We’ll also see how this bird connects to our independence and patriotism.” |
Students listen, identify the tense errors, raise hands and explain:
