Learning objectives covered in this lesson (curriculum reference) 11.1.8 - develop intercultural sensitivity through reading and discussion;
11.4.6 - to determine the attitude, opinion or tone of the author in voluminous texts on a number of more complex and abstract general and curricular topics;
11.4.7 - recognize the structure of creating voluminous texts (at the inter-paragraph level) on a number of more complex and abstract general and curricular topics;
11.6.12 - use a wide variety of modal verbs in the past tense form to express the corresponding functions, use various pseudo-modal structures, including supposed to, bound to, due, willing to on a wide variety of general and curricular topics;
Lesson goal
  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to deduce information and make logical assumptions about people and situations using modals of deduction (must, can't, could, might, may) in the present and past, and pseudo-modal structures (supposed to, bound to, due to, willing to) in at least 8 out of 10 practice sentences.
  • Students will analyze the text "What your profile picture tells about you" to identify the author's tone and opinion, and infer cultural norms related to self-presentation, supporting their conclusions with at least two textual examples.
  • Students will apply the concepts of deduction and rule interpretation to a scenario involving "Law and order," creating a set of 3-5 reasoned deductions about a person's actions based on visual evidence and known regulations.

Engagement (Mind map & discussion)
Teacher: "Good morning! Today we're going to be detectives. Let's start with a 1-minute mind map. On your mini-whiteboards, write down all words you associate with 'deduction' and 'online profile.' Ready? Go!" (Monitors time). "Time's up. Now, look at your maps. I'll pick three words from volunteers: 'guess,' 'evidence,' and 'identity.' Let's discuss. Why is 'evidence' key for deduction? How does an online profile relate to 'identity'? What can we 'guess' from a picture?" Students individually create a mind map on their mini-whiteboards or notebooks. They share their words. In a whole-class discussion, they respond to teacher's questions, e.g., "We need evidence to make a good deduction," "A profile shows part of your identity," "We can guess someone's mood or hobbies from a picture." Descriptors:
  • Generates at least 3 relevant associations.
  • Participates in discussion by providing a reasoned connection between the concepts.
No points.
