Class Grade 9    Attendance: _____    Absent: _____
Lesson topic Countable and uncountable nouns
Learning objectives covered in this lesson (curriculum reference) 9.6.2.1 use a variety of quantifiers for countable and uncountable nouns and some noun phrases on a range of familiar general and curricular topics including majority of, minority of, a great deal of, a great number
Lesson goal
  1. By the end of the lesson students will accurately select and use a variety of quantifiers (a few, a little, many, much, a great deal of, a great number of, the majority of, the minority of) with countable and uncountable nouns in controlled practice with at least 80% accuracy.
  2. Students will produce 4–6 original sentences individually that correctly match quantifiers to countable/uncountable nouns and reflect contexts related to charities and law & order.
  3. In groups, students will create a short poster (3–5 sentences) using quantifiers to describe rules or safety statistics (Law and order integration), demonstrating understanding of legal-literacy vocabulary and observance of rules.

Lesson flow

Lesson stage / Time Teacher actions (complete prompts and instructions) Student actions Assessment formats Resources
Lesson opening (5 min)
Engagement (method): Riddle/brain-teaser
Teacher script and actions (step-by-step):
  1. Greet class and take attendance: "Good morning, class. Let's begin!"
  2. Display riddle on board / projector: "I can be counted one by one (apples, books), or measured in a pile (rice, water). With me you can say 'a few' or 'a little'. What am I?"
  3. Ask: "What could this riddle mean? Think for 30 seconds and put up one finger if you have a hypothesis." Pause.
  4. Call 3 volunteers to share short hypotheses. Prompt: "Why did you choose that? Give one example." Encourage sentence frames: "I think it's ... because ..." "For example, ..."
  5. Confirm answer: "The riddle points to the difference between COUNTABLE and UNCOUNTABLE nouns. Today we'll learn quantifiers for both." Briefly outline lesson goals (1 minute).
Full teacher-class dialogue (sample):
  • Teacher: "What is your hypothesis? Raise one finger if you have an idea." (wait)
  • Student A: "Maybe 'nouns'?"
  • Teacher: "Why nouns? Give an example." Student A: "Because apples can be counted, and water cannot."
  • Teacher: "Good. Another idea?" Student B: "Maybe 'things that you count or measure' — like 'a few apples' and 'a little water'."
  • Teacher: "Exactly — that's our focus today."
Student actions (step-by-step):
  1. Listen to greeting and riddle.
  2. Think silently for 30 seconds; raise finger if have a hypothesis.
  3. Volunteer to explain answer using sentence frames: "I think it's ... because ..." and give an example.
  4. Note the lesson goals on their notebook.
Possible student responses:
  • "I think it's countable and uncountable nouns because apples are countable and water is uncountable."
  • "It's something like 'things you count or measure', e.g., 'two books' and 'some milk'."
Assessment formats and success descriptors:
  • Informal observational check: teacher notes 3 students' hypotheses. Success: at least 70% of class can produce an initial hypothesis linking examples (apples / water) to countable/uncountable distinction.
  • Thumbs-up quick poll: Students show thumbs-up if they understood. Success: majority (≥60%) show understanding.
Resources (full list for stage):
  • Projector or interactive board, slide with riddle text
  • Textbook: Unit 4 pages (if applicable), handout 1 (riddle)
  • Timer (phone)
  • AI tool suggestions: ChatGPT — generate quick alternative riddles; Text-to-speech to play riddle aloud for weaker readers.
