| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (Storytelling with a mistake) |
Teacher: "Good morning! Today, we celebrate languages. Let me tell you a short story. Last week, I met a linguist. She told me that in our wonderful country, Kazakhstan, we have only one official language, Kazakh, and that's it. She also said that saving endangered languages is not important for our history. What do you think? Does my story sound completely right?" Pauses for reactions. Teacher: "Who spotted something that might not be accurate? Let's hear your thoughts." Listens and confirms the mistake: Kazakhstan has Kazakh as the state language and Russian as the official language, and it's home to over 100 languages. Preserving endangered languages is crucial for cultural heritage. |
Students listen actively. They identify the deliberate mistakes in the teacher's story. They volunteer answers: "We have more than one language," "Russian is also official," "Saving languages is important for culture." | Pre-written key words (Kazakh, Russian, official, diverse) on the board. Teacher maintains eye contact and speaks clearly. Allows non-verbal responses (thumbs up/down). | Descriptors only (no points): • The student listens attentively. • The student identifies at least one factual inaccuracy in the story. • The student participates verbally or non-verbally. |
Whiteboard/marker. Presentation slide with the title "Celebrating Languages" and a provocative statement from the story. |
