Teacher: "Good morning! Our topic today is 'Interpreting data'. I want you to think about the word 'data'. What comes to your mind? Let's create a mind map on the board. I'll start: 'numbers'." (Writes "DATA" in the center, adds "numbers"). "Now, give me your associations. Any word or short phrase is fine."
After collecting 8-10 words (e.g., graph, information, research, statistics, confusing, chart, science, survey), the teacher continues: "Excellent. Now, look at our map. I want you to discuss in pairs for one minute: Which three of these words are most important for understanding problems in the world, like charities helping people or conflicts happening? Be ready to share." After pair discussion, the teacher asks 2-3 pairs to share. "Thank you. So, we see data as information, often shown in graphs, that helps us understand complex issues. Today, we'll learn the specific language to talk about this data clearly and academically." |
Students volunteer words for the mind map (e.g., "graph", "analysis", "computer", "facts"). They then turn to their partner (15 students = 7 pairs, 1 group of 3) and discuss the prompt. They select three words (e.g., "information", "statistics", "research") and justify their choice briefly. Selected pairs share their ideas with the class. | Oral formative assessment: Observation of participation in mind map creation and quality of justification during pair share (e.g., "We chose 'survey' because charities use them to find out what people need."). | Whiteboard/markers, student notebooks. AI Tool: Mentimeter or AnswerGarden for real-time collaborative mind mapping. The teacher projects the live word cloud, increasing engagement and visualizing collective thought. |
