Lesson topicProm or Morp   Language focus 1   -ing forms
Learning objectives covered in this lesson (curriculum reference)8.4.1.1 – understand the main points in texts on a growing range of unfamiliar general and curricular topics, including some extended texts;
8.6.15.1 – use infinitive forms after a limited number of verbs and adjectives; use gerund forms after a limited variety of verbs and prepositions; use some prepositional verbs and begin to use common phrasal verbs on a growing range of familiar general and curricular topics.
Lesson goal
  1. Identify and categorise -ing forms (gerunds / present participles) in a short real-world text with 80% accuracy.
  2. Use at least three correct -ing forms (gerund after verb/preposition or as subject) in a written creative task (prom/morp scenario).
  3. Apply the value of diligence by completing a tiered grammar-editing task and reflecting on the quality of own work.

Engagement (storytelling with a deliberate mistake)

Teacher says: “Listen to a short story about a school prom. There is one grammar mistake with an -ing form. Raise your hand when you spot it.”

Story: “Last week we planned having a prom. Everyone was excited about decorating the hall. But Max suggested to organise a ‘Morp’ – a backwards prom! The idea of dancing in pyjamas sounded funny. However, to start the event late was a problem. Swimming in the pool after midnight? That was not allowed.”

Teacher asks: “Which verb form is wrong? Why?”

Expected mistake: “to organise” after “suggested” → should be “organising”. Also “to start” as a subject → should be “starting”.

Elicit rule: after certain verbs (suggest, enjoy, avoid) we use gerund, not infinitive. As a subject we prefer gerund.

  • Listen actively, track the story.
  • Raise hand when they hear the mistake.
  • Volunteer to correct: “suggested organising”, “starting the event”.
  • Briefly explain the rule in own words.
Descriptors (no points):
• Spots at least one incorrect -ing/infinitive form.
• Provides a correct version.
• Attempts to explain the grammar point.
Whiteboard / projector, story handout (optional).
