| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (storytelling with a deliberate mistake) |
Teacher: “Listen to my short story. I visited Baiterek Tower in Astana last summer. It is 105 metres high. The tower has a golden glass sphere and from the top you can see the whole city. The building was designed by Norman Foster and opened in 1997. It represents a modern Kazakh fairy tale. Wait – I made a mistake! Can you spot it? Baiterek was actually opened in 2002, not 1997, and Norman Foster did not design it – the architect was A. Rustembek. Why do I tell you this? Because even famous facts need checking – that’s a part of being a responsible citizen in a law‑governed state. In Kazakhstan’s Constitution, Article 1 says we build a society based on truth and justice. So let’s be accurate.” Prompt: “Turn to your partner and tell them one fact about a modern building you know. Then we will share.” (Wait 30 seconds. Ask 2–3 pairs.) |
|
Visual prompt: flashcard with Baiterek image + key dates (1997? 2002?). Sentence starter on board: “One modern building I know is ______ .” |
