| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement ("What if...?" question) |
Teacher: "Good morning, class! Today we're diving into a unique sporting event. I have a question for you: What if you could create a new Olympic sport using only objects you can find in your kitchen or backyard? Think for 30 seconds. (After pause). Now, share your ideas with your elbow partner for 1 minute. I'll ask a few pairs to share."
Script: "Aliya and Danial, what's your idea?... A rolling pin relay race? Fantastic! That's creative. Now, imagine a festival where sports are mixed with ancient traditions. Today, we'll read about such an event: The Highland Games in Scotland. Our mission is to learn how to find information in a text very quickly using special techniques called scanning and skimming." |
Students think individually about the "What if..." question. They then discuss their ideas in pairs (7 pairs total). Volunteers share their partner's or their own creative sport idea with the class.
Possible responses: "A spoon and egg balance race," "Water bucket lifting," "Towel flipping contest." |
Provide a visual prompt on the board/slide: pictures of common kitchen/backyard items (spoon, bucket, ball, broom). Allow the student to point to an item and use a single word or short phrase ("Spoon race") to participate. |
Descriptors:
|
Whiteboard/markers, projector & slide with "What if..." question and images, timer.
AI Tool: An image generator (e.g., DALL-E, Midjourney) is used beforehand to create fun, engaging visuals of "impossible sports" to spark curiosity on the introductory slide. |
