Lesson goal
  • Students will greet, introduce themselves and ask personal questions using at least 5 target phrases (How are you? I'm fine, thanks. This is Ben. Nice to meet you. Where are you from? How old are you? What's your favourite subject?).
  • Students will understand and respond to basic personal questions on general topics at sentence level (listening and speaking).
  • Students will create and act out a short dialogue in pairs/groups, applying teacher feedback and a self-check plan to improve clarity and rhythm of speech.

Lesson opening (5 min)
Engagement method: 1-minute mind map

Teacher: "Good morning, Grade 5! I'm very glad to see you. We continue studying the unit 'Living Things', and today's topic is very practical — greeting, introduction and asking personal questions. Let's warm up!"

  1. "Take a blank piece of paper. I will give you ONE minute. Write or draw EVERYTHING you associate with the words 'greeting and introduction' — any words, phrases, emojis, pictures." (Starts a visible 1-minute timer.)
  2. After 60 seconds: "Stop! Hands up. Hold up your papers. Now pick THREE words or phrases from your mind map that you think are the MOST useful when you meet a new student at school."
  3. Ask 3–4 students to share. Possible answers: "Hello, hi, good morning", "How are you?", "Nice to meet you", "Where are you from?", "What's your name?", "Bye", "Smile".
  4. "Great job! You already know a lot. Today we will turn these phrases into a real dialogue and act them out like true professionals. Keep your mind map — we will use it again."
  • Draw/write a mind map in 1 minute.
  • Choose 3 associations and raise their hand to share.
  • Listen to classmates' ideas and compare with their own.
 Descriptors only — no points:
  • Creates at least 3 associations on the mind map.
  • Shares ideas voluntarily; attempts to speak English or mixed language.
  • Shows initiative and activity during the discussion.
 A4 blank paper, coloured pencils/markers, timer/stopwatch, whiteboard, sample mind map on the board.
