Lesson topicTime line of biology
Learning objectives covered in this lesson (curriculum reference) 11.3.2.1 - ask and respond with appropriate syntax and vocabulary to open-ended higher-order thinking questions on a range of general and curricular topics, including some unfamiliar topics
11.5.2.1 - use a wide range of vocabulary, which is appropriate to topic and genre, and which is spelt accurately
Lesson goal
  • Goal 1 (knowledge/vocabulary): By the end of the lesson, students will accurately use at least 8–10 specific terms from the biology timeline (pasteurisation, taxonomy, inheritance, helix, transfer, genome, clone, etc.) in their spoken/written responses with correct spelling.
  • Goal 2 (higher-order thinking & speaking): Students will respond to open-ended questions (e.g., "Which discovery changed medicine most?") using justification, comparison, and evaluation — with syntactically appropriate complex sentences.
  • Goal 3 (autonomous work): Students will independently complete a tiered task on the timeline of biology, demonstrating their ability to select relevant details, order events logically, and express cause-effect relations.

Engagement: provocative question
Teacher script: “Imagine you wake up tomorrow and all vaccines, antibiotics, and blood transfusions are gone because someone erased one major discovery. Which single event from biology history, if removed, would set humanity back the most? Vote quickly: A) Darwin’s evolution (1859) B) Pasteurisation (1862) C) DNA double helix (1953) D) Human Genome Project (2003).”

Action: Ask students to stand in corners labelled A-D. After voting, ask 2–3 students from different corners to defend their choice in one sentence. Debrief: “Interesting – many of you value practical medicine; others think understanding evolution is the basis. Today we’ll dig into these milestones.”
– Students listen, reflect, choose a corner.
– They give a short justification: “I chose B because pasteurisation saves millions from infection every day.”
– Engage with peers’ opinions.
Assessment (descriptors only, no points):
• Participates in vote and provides a reason (any level).
• Uses at least one biology-related word in justification.
• Shows respect for others’ opinions.
– Four A3 posters with letters A-D
– Whiteboard for tally
– Slide with question (optional)
