Engagement (Storytelling with a deliberate mistake)

Teacher: “Good morning, class! Today I’ll tell you a short story about the golden eagle — the national symbol of our steppe. Listen carefully because I might make a mistake. Ready?”

Teacher tells: “The golden eagle, or berkut, has lived in Kazakhstan for centuries. In the past, Kazakh hunters have used golden eagles for hunting. Today, the golden eagle has become a national emblem. Last year, a famous berkutchi had trained a new eagle for the Eagle Festival. But wait — did you spot the error? Which tense is wrong?”

Teacher: “Yes! In the first sentence we need Past Simple, not Present Perfect: ‘Kazakh hunters used’ — because it’s a finished past action. In the last sentence, Past Perfect ‘had trained’ is wrong — we need Past Simple ‘trained’ because it’s a single past action with no earlier past reference. Good job!”

Teacher: “Today we’ll explore golden eagles and learn to use Present Perfect and Past Perfect correctly. We’ll also see how this bird connects to our independence and patriotism.”

Students listen, identify the tense errors, raise hands and explain:

  • “have used should be used.”
  • “had trained should be trained.”

Students repeat correct versions.

Descriptor (no points):

  • Identifies at least one tense error in the story.
  • Offers a correct alternative form.
