Text for listening: “Building Self‑Esteem”
When I look back at my teenage years, I remember how often I compared myself to others. I used to think that everyone around me was more confident, more talented, more popular. For a long time I believed that self‑esteem was something you either have or don’t have. But now, at twenty‑five, I understand that self‑worth is a skill you can develop.
My turning point came during a volunteering project. I was working with a group of children who had different abilities. Every day I saw how they celebrated small victories – learning a new word, making a new friend. They didn’t focus on what they couldn’t do. They were constantly improving, and that inspired me. I started keeping a journal where I wrote three things I liked about myself every evening. At first it felt awkward, but after a few weeks I noticed I was becoming more aware of my strengths.
Now I practise positive self‑talk. When I make a mistake, I tell myself: “I am learning, and that’s okay.” I also avoid people who constantly criticise or compare. I have realised that my personal best is not about being perfect; it’s about being a little better than I was yesterday. And honestly, that feels amazing.
