Instructions: You will listen to a dialogue between two friends, Alex and Maya, discussing a book about the human brain and their reading habits. Listen TWICE. Then complete the tasks below.
Transcript (for teacher):
Alex: Have you finished that neuroscience book you were so excited about, Maya?
Maya: "The Brain: The Story of You" by David Eagleman? Absolutely! It was fascinating. It talks about neuroplasticity – how our brains can change throughout life.
Alex: That sounds a bit technical. I prefer fiction for pleasure reading. It lets me escape. Do you think reading such complex non-fiction is truly enjoyable?
Maya: For me, it is! Understanding how we think is my pleasure. The author argues that we perceive reality with a delay, which is mind-blowing. But I see your point about fiction.
Alex: So, you agree that different genres serve different purposes?
Maya: Exactly. He doesn't say fiction is inferior. In fact, he implies that reading fiction might enhance empathy by activating similar brain regions. So, we both win!
Alex: I guess so. Maybe I'll try a chapter. But I still believe my fantasy novels are more fun.
Maya: And I fully support that! The key point from the book is the brain's adaptability. Whether it's learning from a fantasy world or a science fact, the brain grows.
