TASK 1. Reading Comprehension (LO 10.4.1) [4 marks]
Instructions: Read the text about the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). Then, complete the tasks below.
Text:
For decades, scientists have been scanning the cosmos for signals that could indicate the presence of intelligent life beyond Earth. This field of study is known as SETI. Using powerful radio telescopes, researchers listen for non-random patterns or signals that stand out from the natural background noise of space. One famous candidate was the "Wow! signal" detected in 1977—a strong, narrowband radio signal that has never been detected again. Despite numerous projects and technological advances, no conclusive evidence of extraterrestrial communication has been found. Skeptics argue that the vast distances between stars make communication practically impossible, while optimists believe we simply haven't searched in the right way or for long enough. The discovery of thousands of exoplanets in the "habitable zone" has renewed hope, suggesting that the conditions for life might be more common than previously thought.
