Text A: The Hidden World of Fungi
When we think of the organic world, plants and animals usually come to mind first. However, there exists a vast kingdom of life that is crucial for the health of our planet: fungi. Unlike plants, fungi do not perform photosynthesis. They are decomposers, breaking down dead organic matter like fallen leaves and wood, and recycling nutrients back into the soil. This process is vital for soil fertility. Some fungi form symbiotic relationships with plant roots, helping them absorb water and minerals. Interestingly, fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants. They can be found in almost every ecosystem on Earth, from forests to deserts, and even in extreme environments. While mushrooms are the most visible part, the main body of a fungus is a network of tiny threads called mycelium, hidden underground or within its food source.
