| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement: "Past modals sprint" |
Teacher says: "Good morning! Let’s start with a 2-minute video. Watch and listen for modals of regret: should have / shouldn’t have / must have / could have." Play video: Past Modals (Should have / Shouldn't have / Must have / Could have) (Oxford English Now) – first 2:30 min. After video, quick-fire quiz (timer 2 min): "I say a situation – you raise one finger for ‘must have’, two for ‘could have’, three for ‘should have’. Example: ‘She missed the bus.’ → (should have left earlier)." Cues: 1) He is very fit. (must have exercised) 2) They lost the match. (could have trained more) 3) I feel guilty. (shouldn’t have eaten that). No points – just activation. |
Watch video, listen for modals. Respond physically (fingers) to teacher cues. Quick pair check. | Provide a handout with three modal frames: must have + V3, could have + V3, should have + V3. Student points to the correct frame instead of fingers. | Descriptors: • responds to at least 2 out of 3 cues • shows understanding of past modal function (speculation/regret). No points. | Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPeOUDV8IN4; projector; timer; handout for SEN. |
