Engagement ("What if...?")
Teacher: "Good morning! Let's start with a 'What if...?' question. What if, starting tomorrow, all non-fiction books in libraries disappeared? What would be the consequences for your learning, for society? Think for 30 seconds, then share your ideas with your elbow partner."
After 2 minutes of pair discussion, the teacher asks 2-3 pairs to share one consequence each.
Teacher: "Interesting ideas: losing knowledge, not knowing history, not learning safety rules. Today, we'll listen to someone talk about the power of non-fiction books and learn to catch every detail and opinion in their speech."
Students think individually, then discuss the question in pre-assigned pairs (7 pairs, 1 group of 3). They listen to peers and contribute their own ideas (e.g., "We wouldn't know traffic rules," "Scientists couldn't research"). Teacher provides the "What if" question in written form on a card or screen. For a student with attention difficulties, the teacher repeats the question personally and allows a one-word or short-phrase answer. Descriptors: Student participates in the discussion, offers at least one plausible consequence. No points. Projector/screen with the "What if" question. Timer. AI Tool: ChatGPT to generate a list of potential consequences for teacher reference during discussion.
