| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (Storytelling with a deliberate mistake) |
Teacher: "Good morning! Today, we're going on a fantastic journey. Let me tell you a short story. 'Yesterday, I decided to travel to the core of our planet. I packed my suitcase with a winter coat and sunglasses. Although it was a very dangerous mission, I wasn't excited at all. I took an ordinary elevator that went straight down for thousands of kilometers. The walls were hot and glowing, even though I felt very cold.'"
Instruction: "Listen carefully. There are two factual mistakes in my story about a journey to the Earth's centre. Can you spot them? Discuss with your elbow partner for 1 minute." After 1 min: "Who found the mistakes? Yes, it's impossible to take an elevator, and it's extremely hot inside the Earth, not cold. Great! This idea of an impossible journey was famously written about by Jules Verne. Today, we'll explore his novel and learn a useful grammar structure he often used." |
Students listen attentively to the teacher's story.
In pairs (5 pairs total), they discuss and identify the mistakes. Volunteers share their answers: "You can't take an elevator," "It's hot inside the Earth." Students show curiosity about the link to the lesson topic. |
