Teacher says: “Good morning, Grade 8! Today we’re going to talk about an amazing animal. Listen carefully: ‘The red panda lives in the thick forests of the eastern Himalayas. It has black legs, small ears, rusty red fur and a bushy tail. It looks very much like a giant panda — actually, it is the closest relative of the giant panda. Its main food is bamboo, but it also eats insects and grass. Unfortunately, because of hunting and habitat loss, there are now fewer than 100,000 red pandas left in the wild.’ Wait — I made two mistakes in that story. Can you spot them? Discuss with your partner for 30 seconds.”
After pair talk: “Who found a mistake? The first mistake: red panda is NOT closely related to the giant panda; the text says it doesn’t have any close relatives. Second mistake: there are less than 10,000, not 100,000. Great listening!” AI tool suggestion: Use ChatGPT or a voice assistant to generate similar “mistake stories” for other endangered animals for future lessons. Students can also create their own “fact or fake” statements. |
• Students listen actively to the story. • In pairs, they identify two factual errors (red panda relative / population number). • Raise hands and share corrections. |
Descriptors only (no points): • Listens attentively to the story. • Spots at least one mistake independently or with a partner. • Participates in pair discussion. |
• Whiteboard/screen for story (or printed short script). • Timer (30 sec). • Optional: voice recording with deliberate errors. |
