Lesson goal
  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify and correctly label active and passive voice sentences in context with 80% accuracy.
  • Students will collaboratively create and present a short project (poster/digital slide) demonstrating the transformation of active sentences into passive voice across three tenses (Past, Present, Future).
  • Students will apply the rule of passive voice formation to write 3 original sentences about real-world production (e.g., films, books, technology) using different tenses.

Engagement (Real-life news hook)
Teacher: "Good morning! Let's start with today's news. I just read this headline: 'Historic Film Festival is organized in Almaty this week.' Now, here's another version: 'The city organizes a historic film festival this week.' What's the difference in meaning? Who is doing the action in each sentence? Turn to your partner and predict: Why would a writer choose one structure over the other? (30 sec)." Listens to 2-3 predictions. "Today, we're unlocking the secret behind these two ways of presenting information: Active and Passive Voice." Students listen, read the two sentences on the board/screen. They discuss in pairs (12 pairs + 1 trio). They share predictions (e.g., "In the first, the festival is important; in the second, the city is important."). Provide the two sentences in a larger font on a separate card. Use color-coding: underline the doer (subject) in green and the action (verb) in blue. Teacher circulates to the pair/trio with SEN student to prompt discussion with direct questions: "Who organizes in sentence 2?" Descriptors: Student participates in pair discussion. Student attempts to articulate a difference between the two sentences.
No points.
Projector/Screen. Slide with two sentences. Timer. Prepared sentence cards for SEN support.
