| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (What if...? question) |
Teacher: "Good morning, class! Let's start with a quick imagination game. What if... you won a free trip to any country in the world? Where would you go and why? Think for 30 seconds." (Pauses). "Now, turn to your shoulder partner and share your answer. Use 2-3 sentences. I'll ask a few of you to share with everyone."
Possible prompts: "What is the first thing you would do there?" "Who would you take with you?" Teacher (after pair talk): "Okay, who wants to share their partner's dream destination? (Listens to 3-4 responses). Excellent! Notice how you were talking to your friend – it was casual, friendly. Today, we'll learn how to switch that friendly talk to more formal language, like when you write to a hotel or talk to a travel agent, and we'll also practice writing about our trips." |
Students think individually, then discuss in pairs (8 pairs total). They listen to peers and respond to teacher questions.
Possible responses: "My partner would go to Japan to see Mount Fuji and eat sushi." "I would go to Brazil for the carnival because it looks fun and colorful." |
For students with attention/processing needs, the teacher provides a visual prompt (a world map on the board) and pre-written sentence starters on a card: "I would go to ______ because ______." The teacher circulates to ensure the SEN student's partner is inclusive. | Descriptors (no points):
