| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (“What if…?” question) |
Teacher: "Good morning, class. Today we are starting a new, very important topic. I want you to think about this: What if a powerful storm hit our town tomorrow? What would be the first three things you would do? Think individually for 30 seconds, then share your idea with your shoulder partner." Teacher listens to a few pairs, writes key verbs (e.g., "hide", "call family", "get food") on the board. "Great ideas. These actions are often part of dealing with a natural disaster. Today we will learn how to talk about them, understand stories about them, and think about how we can act fairly and responsibly in such situations." |
Students think individually. They then turn to their shoulder partner (17 students = 8 pairs + 1 trio) and share their ideas. Volunteers share their partner's idea with the whole class. | For a student with attention/processing difficulties, the teacher provides the "What if" question visually on a card with three picture prompts (a house, a phone, a family). The teacher can also pre-assign a supportive partner. | Descriptors only (no points): • The student shares an idea related to safety or preparation. • The student listens to their partner's idea. |
Whiteboard/markers. Visual prompt card for SEN student. |
