Engagement (riddle)

“Good morning, class! Listen to my riddle: I am small, I help you write, I have a cap, and I am not a pen. What am I? (pencil) Now another: I am made of rubber, I clean your mistakes. (eraser) Today we talk about school objects – but many of them! Look around – one book, but two ...? (books). We'll learn ‘these’ and ‘those’.”

Show two real objects: a pencil (near) and a ruler (far). “What is this? What is that?” Then show several pens near: “These are pens.” And several notebooks far: “Those are notebooks.”

Ask: “What do you think ‘these’ and ‘those’ mean? Write your guess on mini-whiteboard.”
  • Listen to riddles, answer chorally and individually.
  • Observe teacher demonstration.
  • Write hypothesis about ‘these/those’ on mini-whiteboards (1 word or phrase).
  • Visual realia (actual objects).
  • Pictures of school objects with labels for SEN students.
  • Sentence starters on board: “These are for near, those are for far.”

• Responds to riddle with one word.
• Writes a guess (any attempt) on whiteboard.
• Shows attention.
