| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement: “What if…?” question |
Teacher: “Good morning, everyone! Let’s start with a ‘What if…?’ Imagine we are all part of one global team preparing for an international forum. What if the forum’s main theme is ‘Unity and solidarity’ and you have to read a long, complex text to prepare a summary for your group? How would you quickly find the main idea of each section? Discuss with your partner for 1 minute.” Teacher listens to 3–4 pairs, writes key ideas on the board (skimming, headings, keywords). “Great – today we will practise exactly this skill: matching headings to paragraphs – a key IELTS reading strategy. And we will also see how unity and solidarity appear in the texts we read.” AI integration: Teacher can use ChatGPT to generate 3 different “What if…?” scenarios and choose the most engaging one. |
Students discuss in pairs; possible responses: “I would read the first sentence of each paragraph”, “I’d look for repeated words”, “I would match words from the heading to the text”. Some students share with the whole class. |
Descriptors only, no points. • Actively participates in pair discussion. • Offers at least one strategy for finding main ideas. • Shows respect for partners’ ideas (value: unity). |
Whiteboard / smartboard, markers. AI: ChatGPT (scenario generation). |
