| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (Mind map & discussion) |
Teacher: "Good morning, class! Today's topic is 'Our Neighbourhood'. Let's start with a quick mind map. I'll write 'NEIGHBOURHOOD' on the board. You have 1 minute to shout out any words, places, or feelings you associate with it. Ready? Go!" (Writes all suggestions on the board). "Time's up! Great ideas. Now, let's discuss three of these. For example, 'park' – What can you do in a park? Who goes there? 'Supermarket' – What do you buy there? Is it busy? 'Quiet' – Which places in a neighbourhood are quiet? Why?" | Students actively call out associations (e.g., house, shop, school, friends, playground, noisy, clean). They listen to the teacher's prompts and volunteer answers to the discussion questions about the selected words. | Teacher repeats and points to keywords on the board. For non-verbal SEN students, the teacher offers a pre-made visual card with 3-4 images (park, shop, school) to point to as their contribution. |
Descriptors (no points): • The student contributes at least one relevant word to the mind map. • The student participates in the discussion by providing a simple answer or agreeing/disagreeing with a peer. |
Whiteboard/markers, Visual prompt cards for SEN students, Timer. |
