TASK 1. LISTENING (6 marks)
Instructions: You will listen to a recording (text for the teacher is provided below) twice. The recording is a podcast excerpt about "Minimalist vs. Digital Nomad Lifestyles". After listening, complete the tasks below.
Text for the Teacher (to be read aloud at a natural pace or pre-recorded):
"Welcome to 'Global Lifestyles'. Today we're contrasting two modern ways of living. First, minimalism. This philosophy focuses on owning fewer possessions. Followers believe it reduces stress, saves money, and is better for the environment. They prioritize experiences over things. A key challenge is the social pressure to consume more.
On the other hand, digital nomadism is about location independence. Using technology, people work remotely from cafes in Bali, apartments in Lisbon, or beaches in Thailand. The biggest appeal is freedom and constant travel. However, drawbacks include unstable internet, loneliness, and complex visa regulations. Interestingly, some individuals combine both, living with one suitcase while working online from different countries. This hybrid approach seeks the freedom of nomadism with the intentional simplicity of minimalism."
Task 1A. Skimming for Main Ideas (LO 10.4.3)
You have 60 seconds to skim the questions below before listening. After listening, identify which lifestyle each statement describes. Write M for Minimalism, N for Digital Nomadism, or B for Both.
