| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (storytelling + deliberate mistake) |
Teacher: “Listen to a short story. On 11 March 2011, a massive earthquake struck Japan. It caused a tsunami that flooded the Fukushima nuclear plant. Thousands of people lost their homes. BUT here is a strange detail: scientists say the tsunami was caused by a sudden change in the Earth’s magnetic field — not by the earthquake. Can you spot the mistake? Turn to your partner and discuss in 30 seconds.” Pause, then elicit: “The tsunami was caused by the earthquake (seismic waves), not by magnetic field. Good! Today we will talk about real causes of natural disasters.” Teacher writes on board: Hypothesis ≠ fact |
|
Descriptors (no points): • spots the mistake and explains why it is wrong • uses prior knowledge about natural disasters • collaborates briefly with a partner |
