| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (deliberate mistake/trigger) |
"Good morning class! Today we're going to talk about sports and future plans. I want to share my weekend plans: 'Tomorrow I will going to play tennis with my friend.' Wait, does that sound right to you? What's wrong with my sentence? Let's think about how we really talk about future sports activities."
Teacher writes the incorrect sentence on board and asks: "Who can spot the mistake? Why is it wrong? What would be the correct way to say this?" After 2-3 student responses: "Excellent observations! Today we'll learn exactly when to use 'will' and when to use 'be going to' when talking about sports and future activities." |
Students listen carefully to the teacher's sentence. They raise hands to identify the grammatical error. Possible responses: "You used both 'will' and 'going to' together," "It should be 'I am going to play' or 'I will play'," "You mixed the two future forms."
Students discuss in pairs for 1 minute why the sentence is incorrect and what the correct versions would be. |
Formative: Observation of student responses to identify prior knowledge. Success descriptor: Students can identify the grammatical error and suggest at least one correct alternative. | Interactive whiteboard, ChatGPT for generating additional incorrect examples if needed |
