| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement – Storytelling with a deliberate mistake |
Teacher says: “Listen carefully to the beginning of the Irish legend ‘Finn MacCool and the Giant’s Causeway’. I will tell you the story, but I might make one mistake. Your job is to spot it!” Story (abridged, with mistake): “Long ago in Ireland lived a giant named Finn MacCool. He was very strong and kind. One day he built a huge bridge of stones across the sea to Scotland to fight another giant, Benandonner. When Finn saw Benandonner was much bigger, he ran home and his wife Oonagh dressed him as a baby. Benandonner saw the ‘baby’, thought the father must be enormous, and fled back to Scotland, breaking the bridge behind him. Mistake: Finn built the causeway in one hour using only a hammer.” (Actual legend: he built it over days; the hammer detail is invented.) Ask: “What was wrong in my story? Why is that a mistake?” Transition to value: “In the story, Finn and Benandonner had a rule: no fighting on neutral ground. Today we will talk about why rules and laws help us live peacefully – that is ‘law and order’.” |
