Storytelling with a deliberate mistake – "Find my five errors!" Teacher: "Good morning! Before we start, I want to tell you a short story about Bill and Jim from our textbook. But this morning I am very sleepy, so I will make five mistakes. Your task is to spot them. Listen carefully!" Teacher's story (spoken slowly): "Bill comes to Jim's house. He asks Mrs Smith: 'Is Jim here?' She says: 'Yes, he is in the kitchen.' (mistake 1 – he is in his room) Bill says: 'Where's that?' She answers: 'It's downstairs next to the bathroom.' (mistake 2 – upstairs) Bill goes upstairs and says: 'Wow, your room is small!' (mistake 3 – great/big) Jim says: 'Yes, it's really big.' Bill sees a guitar and asks: 'Whose guitar is this?' Jim answers: 'My sister's.' (mistake 4 – my brother's) Bill says: 'You've got only a bed in your room.' (mistake 5 – he has everything: TV, DVD player, computer) Jim laughs and says: 'But you haven't got your brother in the same room!'" Teacher asks: "What did I get wrong? Who can correct the whole story correctly?" After students correct, teacher displays the original dialogue from the textbook and says: "Well done! Today we are going to talk about your room and your things – just like Bill and Jim. We'll learn to describe our favourite objects and what they are made of." |
Students listen with attention, raise hands or shout out when they hear a mistake, and provide corrections. For example: – "Jim is in his room, not the kitchen!" – "It's upstairs, not downstairs!" – "His room is big, not small!" – "It's his brother's guitar, not sister's!" – "He has many things, not only a bed!" They then briefly predict the topic: "Room, things, describing." |
